DANCE NATION
by Clare Barron, directed by Angela Brazil

November 21 - December 22
presented in rotating rep. with You Got Older
Somewhere in America, an army of pre-teen competitive dancers plots to take over the world. And if their new routine is good enough, they’ll claw their way to the top at the Boogie Down Grand Prix in Tampa Bay. But in Clare Barron’s raucous pageant of ambition and ferocity, these young dancers have more than choreography on their minds, because every plié and jeté is a step toward finding themselves, and a fight to unleash their power.
With a multigenerational cast of women playing our pre-teen heroines, DANCE NATION is surprisingly funny, ambitious, and full of heart.
FINALIST Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 2019

NEWS &REVIEWS
"Dance Nation which runs in repertory with Barron’s You Got Older through December 22 — is a beautifully poignant, vibrant piece that anyone who survived adolescence can understand."
-The Providence Journal
"Each of the cast do marvelous work in this show...a show that empowers women and those that love women, be sure to catch Dance Nation to witness superb acting and direction."
-Theater Mirror
"Dance Nation reminds us that the pressure we put on ourselves and others to make it to the top can exact a heavy cost. Winning can be wonderful, but sacrificing relationships and your soul seem a heavy price to pay for a few
fleeting moments of glory."
-Edge Providence
"Excellent performances... [Angela Brazil] demonstrates an expert ability to guide her actors to the emotional depth and truth of the moment they are playing. She draws some honest and touching performances out of her ensemble, while also creating excellent moments at the other end of the spectrum, the moments of fun, playfulness, and joy."
-Broadway World RI
"Competition, jealousy and uncertainty plague all pre-teen girls, but in few places are they more pronounced than on a competitive dance team. Playwright Clare Barron exploits the tensions teeming within both to craft a visceral and explosive exploration of adolescence in Dance Nation, which the Wilbury Theatre Group is presenting (directed by Angela Brazil) in rep with another Barron play, You Got Older, to create a wholly beautiful and brutal portrait of American girlhood.”
-Motif Magazine
"Clare Barron’s bloody Dance Nation is a frenetic, chaotic look at a troupe of Ohio tweens figuring out their dreams and their bodies. Barron crams a lot into her one-act Pulitzer finalist, and director Angela Brazil keeps the energetic ensemble running and dancing all over the place."
-Law and Order Party
"Excellent performances...Angela Brazil, a member of the Trinity Rep family for over 20 years, directs her first play at Wilbury and does a marvelous job in capturing the author’s many messages."
