About:
Embodied Action is a weekly, drop-in acting class for literally ANYONE (over the age of 16) that uses joy-based games and embodied techniques to explore the performer’s capacity for truth, joy, enthusiasm, and generosity. We create an equitable space where folx can learn to take risks on stage while supporting themselves and others, and this class is an opportunity to get your head by learning to trust your impulses and following them to new and exciting places. Each class has a warmup, group games, and individual/small group exercises. Wear clothes for movement and be prepared to sweat.
Who:
This is a space for ANYONE who wants to activate their inner actor. If you've always wanted to try acting but never found the right vibe - this class is for you. If you've got an MFA and some regional theater credits - this class is for you. If you're over the age of 16 and want something that's going to enhance the work you're doing in your high school/college theater program - this class is for you. Instructor Mycah Hogan leads all classes.
Class Size:
20 (max)
Price:
Suggested $20/class. If you need to pay less, pay less. If you can pay more, pay more. Participants are encouraged to come to as many sessions as possible. Registration is required in advance to attend Embodied Action.
Testimonials:
"Mycah is a phenomenal instructor. He approaches this work with honesty, curiosity, and absolutely no judgment. He encourages us to take risks, fail brilliantly, and then embrace that flop. I am so grateful for him and this course."
"Mycah's energy is absolutely infectious, and he perfectly toes a line between instructor and play-partner. He has incredible energy and is extremely personable. Each class was so much fun! His vibrancy created a container for really enthusiastic work while keeping each class professional and structured."
"Mycah has such a knack for leading space in an incredibly inclusive, and yet being bold and honest as to how the students need to be pushed or challenged and in a course like "Play" that is extremely valuable and I think allowed this class to have a far greater impact on not only our training as artists but also our lives as humans."
Mycah Hogan s an educator and theater-maker who works with performers to help them discover their best, most authentic and enthusiastic selves. He first encountered the art of clown at the International Theater Workshop in Amsterdam, where Mycah began a lifelong study of the comic world with Christopher Bayes. Mycah credits a number of other world-class teachers as major impacts on both his pedagogy and his approach to making work for the last 15 years. Big ups to Kevin Kuhlke (Acting & Directing), Mary Overlie (Six Viewpoints), Emmanuelle Delpech (Clown), Quinn Bauriedel (Improvisation), Anya Saffir (Practical Aesthetics), and Justine Wolf Williams (Play) just to name a few.
As an actor, Mycah has appeared on stage in New York (off-Broadway: Roundabout, the New Group), regionally (Williamstown Theater Fest), and locally (The Wilbury Group, The Gamm Theater, Trinity Repertory). He has acted alongside talents like Sarah Paulson, John Cullum, Jeremy Strong, Andrew Garfield, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Roger Rees, Lily Rabe, Jason Butler Harner, and Lili Taylor, among others; and has been directed by Academy Award nominee Kathleen Turner and Tony nominee Scott Elliott.
Mycah is on faculty at Brown/Trinity Rep's MFA Program, where he teaches Clown and Physical Play. He is also the Dean of Expeditions and Enrichment at a public charter middle school in Providence, RI, and serves as the Education Programs Manager for The Wilbury Theatre Group, where he can be found on Monday nights teaching his hit class EMBODIED ACTION: An Acting Class for Literally Anyone.
