When it premiered in 1960, The Caretaker changed the face of modern theatre. Now Harold Pinter's groundbreaking classic comes to The Wilbury Group in a new production directed by Steve Kidd and featuring Joe Short, Josh Short, and Richard Donelly.
Disturbed handyman Aston has invited an irascible tramp to stay with him at his brothers jumbled London flat. At first it seems that the manipulative guest will take advantage of his vulnerable host. But when Aston's brother Mick arrives, an enigmatic power struggle emerges between the three men that is in equal parts menacing, touching, and darkly comic.
RAVE REVIEWS FOR THE CARETAKER:
"This always thought-provoking company has once again taken on a tough piece of work and made something of it... Joe Short and Josh Short play the brothers to the hilt with strong and subtle performances. As the old man, Richard Donelly is wonderfully possessive. His Davies, is hateful and sadly hopeless. Donelly makes him both needy and vicious in what may well be the performance of the year around here." -RI Public Radio
"Powerful with the right mix of laughs...At just under two hours, this production of The Caretaker is powerfully presented and suitably cast. Each actor — Richard Donnelly as Davies, Joe Short as Aston and his brother Josh Short, who is also Wilbury’s artistic director, as Mick — infuses what must be an exhausting emotional depth to their roles...Donnelly is a master. His delivery is tainted with hypocrisy and malice, yet he manages to earn the trust of each brother at one point, and even the audience. He proves man can be both likeable and despicable simultaneously. The Caretaker is clever and sad, which is the hallmark of Pinter, who has a way of creating characters that make us wince with recognition." -The Providence Journal
"So much good news coming from Providence’s risk-taking Wilbury Theatre Group, the most exciting of the city’s Off-Trinity theater companies. With its Fringe Festival, its new home, and its splendid season opener — a superb production of Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker — the company proves that an arts organization can grow while pushing an experimental and thought-provoking agenda." -The Arts Fuse Boston
"An astounding production...Steve Kidd's direction is phenomenal. The misogyny, racism and classism that are prevalent in the language recall our current political climate, making this the type of edgy conversation-starter Wilbury is known for." -Motif Magazine
"Stunning...A veritable master class in acting that needs to be seen and experienced by all...All three actors are superb and complement each other rhythmically and seamlessly with their flawless delivery of the script. Steve Kidd's sharp direction allows each of them to shine on their own without overshadowing their co-stars...everyone can appreciate acting of such exceptional caliber as this Wilbury Theatre Group production." -Edge Providence
"A fantastic theatrical experience...acting at its best." -Theater Mirror
"Set in the far corner of Wilbury Theatre’s expansive new “playground,” Harold Pinter’s classic psychological drama, The Caretaker, is given a compelling production by three talented actors. Under the capable direction of Steve Kidd, Pinter’s absurdist play is simple and confusing, funny and sad, hopeful and hopeless...Here's your chance to see three brilliant actors interpret Pinter's words in a most compelling manner." -Warwick Beacon
