Join actor, comedian, and creator Nick Mayfield (and director Virginia Scott! and musician John Coyne!) for an immersive workshop that explores the art of transformation and self-expression through the lens of commedia dell'arte. This workshop is designed to accompany Mayfield's one-person show, MASC4MASK, and delves into the techniques used to create a cast of diverse, colorful characters that challenge and celebrate queer identity.
In this workshop, participants will:
1. Learn the basics of commedia dell'arte, including its history, stock characters, and physical techniques.
2. Explore the power of masks in creating distinct, exaggerated characters and how they can be used to represent various aspects of the self, particularly in the context of queer identity.
3. Engage in guided improvisations and character development exercises to unlock their unique cast of characters.
4. Discuss the role of humor, satire, and stereotypes in addressing internalized homophobia, gender norms, and societal expectations.
5. Collaborate with fellow participants to create short, character-driven scenes that showcase the range of perspectives and experiences within the queer community.
Whether you're an aspiring performer, a seasoned actor, or someone interested in exploring the intersection of queerness and comedy, this workshop offers a safe, supportive space to play, take risks, and discover new facets of yourself. Embrace the magic of transformation and let your inner cast of characters take center stage!
